STANLEY SMITH | Founder / President
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Stan was a sales manager for State Industrial Products, a specialty industrial and commercial chemicals company. He had been active for many years as a volunteer for the Bikur Cholim of Cleveland and trained at The Cleveland Clinic, University Hospital, and The Gathering Place, a nationally recognized community-based cancer support center. Upon his retirement and relocation to Florida, Stan noticed that there was no existing Bikur Cholim organization serving the wider community, only various synagogue chesed committees which saw to their own members. He wanted a wider reach and set about starting his own independent Bikur Cholim on an informal basis in 2002. Boca Raton Community Hospital allowed Stan full access to provide pastoral services to the entire Jewish community and he visited the hospital by himself three or four times a week. Since founding BCSPBC five years ago Stan oversees all activities. He serves as Para-Chaplain and offers his services to Rabbis at all the local synagogues. Bikur Cholim of South Palm Beach County serves the entire Jewish community regardless of an individuals degree of observance. Stan believes that one must emulate Hashem and express their love and care for every person. It’s not uncommon for a member of the nursing staff to ask Stan if he would step in to see patients who are not on the Jewish census. Bikur Cholim has remained independent and autonomous of any particular shul or organization, and Stan remains free to focus on what he does best, visiting and tending to families, as well as seriously ill patients with degenerative and fatal diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, dialysis, and various degrees of dementia.
